History

Hannahstown Credit Union has been serving our members for over 40 years. In 1971 the 11 founder members put in a pound each, and got the use of a room in St. Oliver Plunkett Primary School on the Glen Road. Despite many setbacks in the early days the credit union grew steadily and in 1978 purpose-built premises were opened on the present site; extended in 1985; and extensively refurbished in 2003. From that humble start of £11, Hannahstown Credit Union now has assets of over 5 million pounds and over 3000 members.

We are a community-based financial co-operative run largely by volunteers.  Hannahstown Credit Union Ltd. is owned entirely by it’s members and is run on a not-for-profit basis. Any surplus cash after expenses is paid back to the members as a dividend in proportion to their savings and a refund of some interest is paid back to borrowers.
The volunteers and staff of your Credit Union have always kept, and will continue to keep, the best interests of you the member and of our local community at the forefront of everything that we do.  Our motto “Not for Profit but for Service” is – and always will be – our guiding principle.
